The bacteria within the large bowel will produce either hydrogen or methane gas or a combination of both when the ingested sugars are not completely absorbed by the small intestine. The gas will be absorbed into the bloodstream from the bowel and will travel to the lungs where it is breathed out and into the breath testing bags.
