“HOn3″ is a track gauge equaling 36″ track spacing in HO scale. An HOn3 model is an HO scale model of a full-size piece of equipment that runs on 36″ gauge track. That is narrow gauge, as the standard track gauge in this country is 4′ 8 1/2”. “On30″ is a track gauge equaling 30” (2 1/2′) in O scale.
Who makes HOn3 track?
CMD models and SARModel produce South African HOn3 1⁄2 models. Most Japanese and Taiwanese HO scale models are made to run on 16.5mm gauge track and are made to 1:80 scale (Tomix, Kato and Tenshodo for Japan being the main brands and Haskell for Taiwan) but some small volume HOn3.

HOn3 (HO scale, 36 inch gauge) is designed to run on accurately scaled track, 10,5mm gauge. HOe, aka HOn2 1/2 (according to MR magazine) or HOn30 (everyone else outside of Japan,) is used for 30 inch gauge prototypes and runs on N scale 9mm gauge track. Granted that 30 inches was a most uncommon gauge in North America.
What is Sn3 scale?
Sn3 is 1:64 scale running on unique 14.3mm gauge track. There is much less commercial support for Sn3, leading many who choose this interesting gauge to handcraft their own rolling stock and handlay rail.
What is the difference between HO and On30?
On30 is 1:48 scale, the same as O scale. It’s a subset of O scale. HO scale is 1:87 scale, about half the size. It turns out that HO scale track is about 30 inches wide in O scale, making it convenient for modeling narrow gauge trains.
