How do you convert FIR to IIR?

How do you convert FIR to IIR?

I agree with RBJ that one way to approach the problem is to look at the FIR filter’s impulse response and use a time domain method (such as Prony’s method) to approximate that impulse response by an IIR filter. If you start from the frequency response then you have lots of methods for designing IIR filters.

Can you derive FIR approximation of IIR?

It is impossible to convert IIR filter to FIR filter exactly, we can only approximate IIR filter with FIR model. Fernando Soares Schlindwein solutions are the best ways for converting IIR filter to FIR filter.

How do you determine if a system is FIR or IIR?

When y[n] depends upon y[n−k], where k is a positive integer , then the system is said to be IIR . Otherwise , it is FIR filter.

What is the difference between FIR and IIR filter?

IIR can be unstable, whereas FIR is always stable. IIR, when compared to FIR, can have limited cycles, but FIR has no limited cycles. IIR is derived from analog, whereas FIR has no analog history. IIR filters consist of zeros and poles, and require less memory than FIR filters, whereas FIR only consists of zeros.

Is the filter FIR or IIR?

The crucial difference between FIR and IIR filters is that the FIR filter provides an impulse response of a finite period. As against IIR is a type of filter that generates impulse response of infinite duration for a dynamic system. Here we are talking about finite and infinite impulse response.

Can a FIR filter be converted to an IIR filter?

I would say that the answer to your question – if taken literally – is ‘no’, there is no general way to simply convert an FIR filter to an IIR filter.

When to use linear phase in IIR filters?

One chapter deals with the frequency domain design of IIR filters. That method can be used to design IIR filters with approximately linear phase in the pass-bands, or to approximate any other desired phase (and magnitude) response.

Can a IIR filter have a maximum pole radius?

That method can be used to design IIR filters with approximately linear phase in the pass-bands, or to approximate any other desired phase (and magnitude) response. The filters are not only guaranteed to be stable, but you can also prescribe a maximum pole radius, i.e., you can define a certain stability margin.

What is the equation error method for IIR filters?

Another very simple method for the frequency domain design of IIR filters is the equation error method, which is described in the book Digital Filter Design by Parks and Burrus. I’ve explained it in this answer.
