Standard register sizes can range anywhere from 2-1/4″x10″ up to 8″x14″. The most common sizes are 4″x10″, 4″x12″, 6″x10″, and 6″x12″ in medium-sized rooms such as bedrooms and dining rooms. Smaller sizes may be found in areas such as laundry rooms, bathrooms, and hallways.

Is it OK to cover a floor register?

Covering the floor registers in your home is potentially dangerous if you cover them when using the heating or cooling system. The air pushes through the grates, but the covers block the air from escaping. Covering the grates also is dangerous when you have asbestos lining the walls.

Should floor registers match the floor?

For wood registers, you want to make sure you have the matching species. Most wood registers come in red oak and white oak, so choose carefully. If you have another species or a pre-finished wood with a stain color, you will have more difficulty matching (and you may be be better off with metal ones.

What is the difference between a floor register and a floor diffuser?

While similar to registers, a diffuser differs in terms of the airflow direction variability. A diffuser and its dampers are designed facing all-round, rather than a register’s single air direction. Many diffusers are found on ceilings, often covering an air-con or air release outlet.
